Dog Can Hide (Ready to Read: Ready-To-Go)

From Laura Gehl, author One Big Pair of Underwear and Goat Wants to Eat, comes another side-splitting Ready-to-Go! Ready-to-Read about a thrilling game of hide-and-seek between three animal friends.

Cat is it. Dog can hide. Frog can hide. Can Cat find Dog and Frog?

Perfect for kids at the beginning of their reading journeys, Dog Can Hide was written for children who have learned the alphabet and are ready to start reading! And what better way to get kids excited than with a hilarious story with words they can read on their own? Each Ready-to-Go! Ready-to-Read includes a note to parents explaining what their child can expect, a guide at the beginning for readers to become familiar with the words they will encounter in the story, and reading comprehension questions at the end. Each Ready-to-Go! story contains about 100 words and features sight words, rhyming words, and repetition to help children reinforce their new reading skills. In this book, readers will learn ten sight words and thirteen words from four word families. So come on and get reading!

K-Gr 2--A game of hide-and-seek between Dog, Cat, and Frog takes off over the pages of this story, putting a fun spin on a classic game. The friends take turns as the seeker, while the others find hiding places including logs, mats, bogs, and creeks. Sometimes it's easy to find friends, like when Frog burps after eating a fly. Other times, the seeker struggles. Bright, sketch-style illustrations will stand out to readers right away. The expressiveness of the characters' faces will keep kids laughing, as will some of the funny places the animals choose to hide. Readers will be able to build on their own knowledge of hide-and-seek to support their reading, as the text describes what the characters can and can't do. The text uses repetitive, rhyming words. Two pages at the beginning list all of the words in the story, organizing them by word families, sight words, and bonus words. This will be helpful to both readers and educators supporting students. VERDICT This friendly, silly game of hide-and-seek will have readers eager to build their reading skills.--Kristin Brynsvold
