Description

PreS-Gr 3-A warm family story steeped in Mexican culture. Lori describes the preparations for her sister Cuqui's summertime party, as she and her mother go to tia Sabina's house and to the market that's full of colorful pinatas, delicious-smelling food, and eye-catching delights. The day finally arrives and when the girls enter the barbecue, they hear the shouts, " Feliz cumpleanos, Lori!" Cuqui explains that she felt they should swap birthdays, since Lori never gets to do the things she likes for her winter birthday such as swim and barbecue. The bright gouache and colored-pencil artwork and festive borders around the text perfectly suit the spirit of the story.-Mildred Rivera Said, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
