PreS-Gr 2-This free verse poem is an ode to a passenger train that "wakens to the dusk," carries out its responsibilities, and then sleeps after the sun rises. The steam engine, fueled by coal, travels through hills, across plains, over rivers, and past wheat fields and barns on its journey. Using words such as rattle, rumbles, and squeal and creak, the lyrical text succinctly describes the sounds of the train: "Wheels a-clatter, creatures scatter--hissing, chugging, mountain-hugging night train." Offering differing perspectives, the engaging digital illustrations vary in size, many of which are spreads while others are smaller and placed on white backgrounds that brighten the darker views of the countryside. The locomotive is observed by animals, including raccoons, deer, and horses, as it travels across bridges and through tunnels to reach its destination just as the sky begins to lighten. VERDICT The calming text and appealing pictures work beautifully together to create an evocative and soothing bedtime story. Best shared one-on-one.-Maryann H. Owen, Oak Creek Public Library WI
